24 hours after departing Les Sables d’Olonne, there is no drama to report for the GGR fleet heading towards Cape Finisterre, which will mark their exit from the Bay of Biscay and the intense merchant and fishing traffic in the area.
Unsurprisingly, it is the 2018 veterans and the “three musketeers” of the Gijon Prologue who are fighting for the top spots at the forefront of the fleet. The most competitive sailors are looking to position themselves to the north-west of the fleet in order to be the first ones to get the strong winds of the low-pressure system located west of Ireland.
While Tapio Lehtinen, having tacked too early, has lost ground, Damien Guillou and Simon Curwen have perfectly negotiated the wind variations and are ideally placed. They should soon find a south westerly flow of 25-30 knots with a west rotation mid-week, which should mark the passage of the Cape Finisterre TSS and the descent along the Portuguese coast towards the Canaries.
