Windy days, finally?
Simon Curwen still has a 100 nm lead over the three sailors chasing after him. Kirsten is leading them with a remarkable 2nd place she’s been fighting for all weekend, but remains in a tight race with Tapio 25 miles to the north, and Pat 10 miles to her south, whose westerly position places 3rd.
The upcoming battle between Kirsten’s Cape George 36, Pat’s Saga 36 and Tapio’s Gaïa 36, three different designs in similar conditions, promises to be exciting! Shame that Abhilash, further east with different wind conditions can’t join the fun with the Rustler 36!
Big mid-fleet pack where 7 boats, representing half on the fleet are now sailing. To the west, Jeremy, Damien and Gugg hit a windless patch, caught up by Ian Herbert Jones who posted the best 24-hour performance: 126 miles, 300 miles east of them. Ertan and Guy are also in variable conditions, and Elliott whose placement penalises in the rankings and for wind: 34 miles in 24 hours.
With a steady southerly flow moving north-west, Damien’s group will get some wind later today, while the outcome is uncertain in the eastern group led by Ertan. Arnaud cleared the Cape Verde Islands, rounding them to the east and allowing him to reposition himself, and facing a very different week than the last one he spent downwind in the breeze!
