Day 147

MacGyvering…

It was an eventful weekend for the fleet, starting of course with Simon who broke his windvane shaft on Friday evening and had a few issues with his mainsail. Since then, the Briton has been testing a sheet to tiller system that works and is now on a SE course towards Cape Horn. He is trying to find a solution to repair his windvane at sea and not stop for spares.

At the back of the fleet, Guy spent the weekend under bare poles, towing warps in 35-60 knots of wind. He is sailing only 800 miles from the longitude of Hobart this morning. Ian ahead of him has just come out of the Tasman Sea, passing the Snares Islands, with the luxury of catching up with Jeremy who was stopped Saturday under New Zealand, as Puffin took a front behind him to regain 50 miles over the weekend.

Mid-fleet, Gugg is doing well staying under 46°S (and over 47°). Kirsten is doing very well, clocking up 160, 170 and even 185 miles a day on January 26. She overtook Abhilash Tomy who is tending after himself and Bayanat on a more stable and comfortable course, even though he is sailing a slower, less direct route.
