Day 148

Bad news from the frontline

The news came last night: Simon Curwen, unable to repair his Hydrovane but also unable to sail towards Cape Horn in all weather, decided to limit the risks and decided for a stopover north east of his position, where he can sail quickly and land safely. In doing so, the leader from Cape Finisterre is now in Chichester Class.

Behind him, Michael, Kirsten and Abhilash will all pick up 25-30 knots of SW and 6-metre seas later today. Conditions that will allow Gugg, now third, to increase his pace in conditions he and Nuri like, and Kirsten (current GGR leader) to exit the zone on Wednesday, finally free to dive south! Abhilash, more conservative with his body and boat on the mend and also further north, will probably gybe to the SE overnight and get out of the zone in second position.

At the back, Guy will take out the warps and the chain again tonight for a wild 24-hour ride in foul weather and rough seas, but will get a calmer midweek to rest. Ian and Jeremy will take 25 knots of NE in the evening, going into high 30s during the night to pass Bounty and join Captain Gugg to the northern limit of the exclusion zone.
