Day 221

Turbo!

A change of scenery in the North Atlantic as a big low-pressure system settles in this weekend and pushes the high-pressure system eastwards. Abhilash, the most northerly positioned of the fleet, is reaping the most benefits, sailing downwind in 25+ knots, and is setting the record straight: fastest today at 155 miles and the best 4-hours average speed of the week!

Behind, Kirsten is not dragging her feet either, at 135 miles today. She still holds the best 24-hour distance of the week at 172 miles and is resisting Bayanat’s assaults as best she can, only conceding 25 miles to the Rustler today at 70 miles. Simon at 140 miles/day has Kirsten in his wake. The trio are heading straight for the Azores at 500 miles, with some great island photo shoots early next week!

Michael is not sure to be out of the doldrums yet, alternating squalls and windless areas, with choppy, uncomfortable seas. His average speed is lower than his mates and he conceded 60 miles to the race leaders this morning. Jeremy on the other hand has found his rhythm on Olleanna at 120/130 miles/day even with lighter conditions than expected. The Speedy Saffer, who was talking to Ian daily on the HF radio, is relieved to know he is on his way to Cape Town.
