At 1900hrs UTC Jeremy called GGR on his sat phone to report the failure of his forestay at the stem fitting or bow chain plate. The stainless plate that holds the forestay failed. He was able to secure the reefing gear and remove the sail, but it is now impossible to reconnect it. All other rigging supporting the mast is secure and the mast is not damaged. At the time he was sailing into 25kt head winds gusting higher and about a two-to-three-metre sea. He still has an outer forestay connected to the end of the stainless-steel bowsprit and the inner forestay is secure and two running backstays are supporting that. He has two spinnaker halyards set on the stem. He can now only use his staysail and light big genoa with his mainsail. He has not requested any assistance and simply says it will take longer for him to reach Les Sables d’Olonne now. GGR will provide weather information in future and some routing advice.
