The Skipper

Why the GGR?

I have never sailed a dinghy, never raced a boat and my family has nothing to do with sailing. I studied politics and geography, worked for NGOs, had a nice little vinyl collection and was well on track to live a comfy, urban landlubber life … until a good friend and I bought a 50 year old sailboat on eBay with zero clue about sailing. That was just before New Year 2019.

Since then, I sailed 15.000 miles, smelled a lot of Epoxy, learned how to navigate by the stars and crossed the Atlantic twice, including a solo crossing from the US to France. I found home at sea, and especially in the solitude at sea.

I then joined the GGR 2022 organising team and got a very good grasp of the boats, race rules and what it takes to sail eight months alone around the world. Taking the satellite calls from the skippers deep down in the Southern Ocean was an incredibly inspiring experience.

Now, it’s time for me to set sail for this old soul’s race around the world. Why? Because I know that I can do it!

Best and worst aspects

I consider the best part to be the solitude and the worst part to have no sauna.
